Silver Bream

Silver Bream (Blicca bjoerkna)

These European members of the Carp family are primarily bottom feeders. Bream are widley distributed in stillwaters, canals, and deep, slow flowing rivers.

DISTRIBUTION: From Eastern England to the Caspian Sea, except Northern Scandinavia, Spain, Portugal, and Italy.

TECHNIQUES: Float fishing, or ledgering.

BAIT: Whether float fishing or ledgering, heavy and frequent groundbaiting is recommemded because they will not stay long in a swim where there is no food readily availablle: use large clumps of bread, containing pellets. (In Cyprus) Ideally, we should use bread flake, maggots, casters, worms and corn, but most of these are difficult to acquire. Corn and even pelet paset on the hook have been known to yeild good results.

TACKLE: Float fishing; use a 4 to 4.3m (13 to 14ft) light action float rod with a fixed spool reel, 3.2 to 4.1 kg (7 to 9lb) line, and hook sizes 10 to 14. To ledger for bream, try a 3.4 to 3.7m (11 to 12ft) fod with a built in quiver tip, and a fixed spool reel, 1.8 to 2.7kg (4 to 6lb) line, and hook sizes 6 to 12.
